Application procedure for the English-language Master’s programme in business administration starts 1 August
The degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship (BME) develops the students’ competence in the changing domestic and international business environments.
BME, which leads to the degree Master of Business Administration, educates students for strategic management and business development in small and medium-sized enterprises, focusing particularly on their international operations. There is a great demand for strategic thinking, new business concepts, networking and management skills in the global operational environment.
Master's studies take 2,5 years to complete as part-time multiform studies together with a normal day job, if necessary. There are about 4-5 contact sessions in Rauma per academic year. Each contact session takes 2-3 days. Exercises based on working life and RDI projects characterize the learning process. The degree programme, of which 90 per cent consists of online studies, can easily be completed in addition to a regular job in Finland or abroad. The thesis, with which the student can develop the activities at his or her workplace, is a major part of the degree studies.
All those who have completed business studies worth at least 40 ECTS credits at a higher education institution are eligible to apply. Furthermore, the applicants are required to have a Bachelor’s degree, as well as work experience of at least three years in the relevant field. The language of instruction is English; hence, applications from both Finns and non-Finns are welcome. The students currently pursuing studies in the BME programme come from Finland, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, Morocco and India.
Applications for the degree programme in Business Management and Entrepreneurship can be submitted from 1 August to 27 September 2013. The studies will commence in January 2014.

Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) organizes in cooperation with University Consortium of Pori (UCPori) and Diaconia University of Applied Sciences (Diak) an Erasmus Intensive Language Course (EILC) for the first time this year. The course goes on for three weeks, from August 6th to August 27th 2013. There are altogether 16 exchange students taking part in Finnish language course.
The EILC courses are organized for European Erasmus students and courses are funded by the European Union.
First week is full of first times: first words in Finnish, first time in sauna, first new EILC-friends… In addition to Finnish language lessons, we organize many cultural activities during the three course weeks. Students will experience for example Finnish sauna, nature and taste Finnish famous candy, Salmiakki! The cultural programme forms an essential part of the course. Various activities and excursions include experiencing the Finnish nature, the Finnish baseball ‘pesäpallo’ the archipelago of Satakunta region and the seaside with a possibility to try windsurfing in the famous Yyteri beach.
After completing the course, the students will know how to pronounce Finnish and use basic vocabulary and phrases needed in everyday interaction. The students will be able to read easy texts and write short messages as well as participate in basic discussions: to talk about themselves and their families and know some of the vocabulary on eating, shopping, travelling and health care. They will be able to ask simple questions, know numbers, days of week and months. The students are able to communicate in typical real-life situations in Finnish. They will also be familiar with main features in the Finnish culture and lifestyle.
The ongoing admission process to the Degree Programme in Innovative Business Services has been suspended on 4 September 2013, since Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) does not start the IBS programme in its present form neither in January 2014 nor thereafter.
The degree programme of Innovative Business Services will be combined with the degree programme of International Business and Marketing Logistics during the year 2014. The teaching will be organized in Rauma in the future. Schedule will be informed later.
This decision is related to the structural change of universities of applied sciences and also to the renewal of SAMK's license. SAMK wont apply license for a business education conducted in English in Pori. These actions will be centralized to wider corresponding education that will be organized in Rauma. There wont be intake for IBS during this joint application period.

The OpenSAMK is a fair where visitors have a possibility to get to know the SAMK's education during information session and work shops. There will be also companies from the region.
The OpenSAMK events will take place at Kanali Campus in Rauma on 5 November 2013 at 12-16 and at Tiedepuisto Campus in Pori on 7 November 2013 at 12-16.
Especially the students of secondary education are warmly welcome to the events. For the students extremely interesting is the part of fairs where companies present their actions. This part of fairs is a good way to meet the representers of the companies.

Application Period is 7 January to 11 February 2014.
You can apply online at www.admissions.fi.
Porin Apparaatissa. Nopeimmat mahtuvat mukaan!
Ideana on suunnitella sovellus Tacticin tulevaan Appsessory-tuotekategoriaan.
Suositeltu ryhmäkoko on 1–6 henkilöä. Yksinkin saa siis osallistua, mutta ryhmässä on hauskempaa ja saa enemmän aikaan! Bootcamp järjestetään englanniksi, lisätietoja ja ilmoittautuminen alla:
Now you have an amazing opportunity to join fun and interesting Tactic bootcamp! The idea is to gather a group of students and invent an idea of a new application for Tactic Games' upcoming Appsessory product category. The group size is 1–6, so you can also work alone, but team work is more fun and you can achieve more. You can also gather your group in the bootcamp. You don’t have to have IT-skills, all ideas are welcome! The bootcamp is held in English.
Be quick and enroll your group or just yourself, only the quickest can join!
• Create a concept of an Appsessory of your choice.
• A concept is an understandable and tangible description of an Appsessory.
• A concept describes
– What need does the Appsessory satisfy?
– What is the approach to satisfy that need?
– What are the benefits of this approach?
• A concept can be an illustrated powerpoint presentation, animated illustration, UI mockup or working prototype on a smartphone or tablet.
• An Appsessory is a mobile application which complements an existing product.
• An Appsessory may ease and offer help in an everyday task.
• An Appsessory may extend the usefullness of an existing product or service.
• An Appsessory is fun to use, is playful and may even be entertaining as is.
• An Appsessory as such does not add value.
• An Appsessory may be related to an existing Tactic Games product or service (e.g. board game), but may also be something totally else...
• Any student! The challenge is primarily targeted at cross functional student teams.
• A successful concept may need insights in human behaviour, visual design, usability, programming and mobile technology.
• Possibility to get 1 credit, talk to your teacher/professor.
1. Enroll by 28.2.2014
2. Tactic Challenge starts 12.3. 10-12

Degree Programme in International Business
Degree Programme in Physiotherapy
For many years physiotherapy education has been the most popular programme among applicants in SAMK. This year over 600 applicants were registered, and for almost 250 applicants it was their first choice, which is more than 12 times the intake we have. In Finland the degree programme in physiotherapy is offered in 15 universities of applied sciences and SAMK was the fourth most popular choice among them. In addition to physiotherapy education in Finnish, we also have a physiotherapy programme in English.
The core of the physiotherapist’s daily work consists of limitations in functioning and mobility as well as their prevention and rehabilitation through different therapy interventions.
SAMK succeeds in co-operation with businesses. Therefore, this co-operation should be increased, say mayors from Pori and Rauma, Ms. Aino-Maija Luukkonen and Mr. Kari Koski. Both mayors give as keys to success the following: Business, entrepreneurship, co-operation and internationality as well as recruiting new students and quality of teaching.
Both mayors have participated in the work of SAMK’s board. Currently they are working with campus issues and increasing co-operation with Turku University of Applied Sciences.
New campuses are planned both in Pori and in Rauma. Luukkonen is very excited about the new campus in Pori. “It will be interesting to see what kind of innovations will appear around the campus area. When the travelling centre will be next to it, the campus will be located centrally in terms of logistics. The young people will also show up in the streets instead of being in Vähärauma (where Tiedepuisto campus is situated). They give faith in the future.
In Rauma there is less demand for additional facilities, because the already existing buildings can be used for now and also in the future. Koski understands that caution is needed in construction but thinks that centralisation of functions is necessary.

Press release
15 December 2014
Citycon will start the construction of a new campus for SAMK, the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences in Pori. The new University of Applied Sciences campus will be located in the city centre of Pori, on the Asema-aukio square next to the railway station. Currently, there is an office and retail building on the plot, most of which will be demolished.
The Asema-aukio property is one of Citycon’s other retail properties and currently house approximately 19,000 square metres of gross leasable area. Citycon won the competitive bidding for the campus project organized by the city of Pori in February this year.
A total of 14,000 square metres of new leasable space will be constructed during the project and 9,000 square metres will be totally (re)developed. Of the total new 23,000 square metre property, 19,200 square metres will be in SAMK’s use with a lease for 20 years. The property is fully leased. The total investment in the development is approximately EUR 40 million.
The construction will begin already in December with preparatory and demolishing works. NCC Construction will act as the project management contractor in charge of the construction work. The premises will be handed over to SAMK in spring 2017, and teaching on the new campus will begin at the start of the autumn semester in 2017. The existing K-supermarket grocery store and the pharmacy will serve as usual throughout the project in the property.
“The office and retail property on Pori’s Asema-aukio square is functionally and technically outdated but it is located in a prime location in the city centre. This means the plot is suited to be used as a campus by the University of Applied Sciences. The project will secure a strong, long-term tenant for the Asema-aukio property and solve the considerable vacancy the property has had in recent years,” says Harri Holmström, Chief Commercial Officer at Citycon Oyj.
”The new campus will offer for SAMK efficient, functional and flexible premises. We believe that the central location, good traffic connections and functional, modern learning environment will add students´ motivation on their studies. This will also make SAMK and Pori more interesting location as a place to study”, says Juha Kämäri, Head Master of the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences.
”The Satakunta University of Applied Sciences is now been provided a future´s learning environment that without doubt enhances Pori´s appeal as a university city. The new campus is located next to the future public transportation center and within walking distance from the airport. This accessibility is among the top on nation level and it will also provide excellent basis for companies to locate in the area. The campus and the public traffic center will genuinely add demand for services in the Pori city center”, says Aino-Maija Luukkonen, the Mayor of Pori. She is also very pleased with employing effects of the project.

Marja Flinck was voted as the best teacher by the students in 2014.
Flinck teaches clinical psychology and substance abuse work in the Degree Programme in Nursing. She also supervises the students’ Bachelor’s theses. She makes things in a way which some consider old-fashioned: “I call the students by name in every class. I think it is important to be called by the name.”
“I have a motto: the best thing you can do to another person is to tell them, what they mean. The students feel that I respect them and they are important. In addition, I enjoy my work. The students develop their professional identity by growing into it. You can’t just teach it, but you have to learn it in the same way you grow into parenthood.
How do Southwest Finland and Satakunta respond to international competition and boost their vitality? The answer lies in competence development. For this purpose, the Board of CoastAL, the consortium of Turku and Satakunta Universities of Applied Sciences, has decided to create shared structures which include e.g. Master’s degree studies, a year-round course supply and developing a provincial university of applied sciences.
“By bringing the experts from both universities of applied sciences for the use of the entire region we can increase our impact in a very resource-wise manner”, states Olli Mertanen, the Executive Director of CoastAL.
The recently approved strategy of CoastAL defines joint structures from the beginning of 2016.
One of the focus areas of the strategy is Master’s degrees. Their course supply and options can be increased once the total number of students increases as a result of the cooperation. At the same time, the diversity of the studies, the joint planning of the degree programmes and the shared supply and implementations will be developed.
The course supply will be expanded as year-round. The course supply of the universities of applied sciences will be opened more extensively to all students with a study right.
“We will increase studies that are independent of time and place and develop part-time teaching methods as well as those that are completely implemented online”, promises Olli Mertanen.
A provincial university of applied sciences is also being developed.
“In practice it means that we support the business life of the region also outside the main UAS locations. We will pay special attention to adult and continuing professional education, Open UAS studies, students’ practical training periods and theses and research, development and innovation activities. Thus studying and cooperating with working life is possible in entire Southwest Finland, including the smaller places”, states Assistant Executive Director Anne Kärki.
The other focus areas of CoastAL are quality management, publications, research groups, business accelerator activities and a PhD accelerator. The aim of the cooperation is to create a nationally and internationally competitive structure to serve Southwest Finland, and to take the focus areas of the regional programmes and the cooperation in Southwest Finland into account. This will happen by combining the activities of the two universities of applied sciences which complement each other.
