The second international summer school started

Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences are arranging for the second time the International Summer School in 18 May – 12 June 2009. Summer School gathers students all the way from the Unites States, Europe and also from Finland to spend two weeks in Pori and two weeks in Rovaniemi. During one month the students are learning new information from their respective fields and getting to know a new culture.

The idea of the Summer School developed originally from the need to improve the co-operation with the American universities. In Finland there are lot of students willing to go for an exchange in USA but not the other way around. Now Pori and Rovaniemi are trying to temp the Americans with Summer School which lasts a shorter period of time.

- "Last year we had about 40 participants and this year over 50. We have also three American teachers coming and they are taking part in the realization of Summer School", tells Summer School coordinator Marina Wikman happily.

Summer School consists of three different cases: business, technology and health care and social services. The case is chosen depending on students own studies. In addition to this there are additional courses like Russia as business and co-operation environment, which includes an excursion to St. Petersburg.

- "The wishes of the students have been taken in to notion when constructing the program. We also wanted that all the faculties of SAMK would be represented", Wikman explains.

The first two weeks of Summer School are carried through at SAMK in Pori and the other two at RAMK in Rovaniemi. This co-operation of two universities of applied sciences gives the summer school students a more profound picture of Finland and also makes the contents of the studies more versatile.

In addition to studies there are lot of extra curriculum activities from steering the SAMK ship simulator to trekking weekend in Lapland. In Pori the students also get to try surfing at the Yyteri Beach.
